Events for the week of December 19, 2011

Happy Holidays and Feliz Navidad a todos!

This week is a clean up week before we go on vacation for the holiday break. After having our chapter 2 test last week, we are now making sure everyone has taken it so that we can have a fresh start with chapter 3 after vacation. We are finishing our oral presentations in front of the class this week. Students picked an age and a country out of a can and had to draw a picture of themselves with their likes and dislikes, their country's flag, digital age, name and country. The presentations have been very good overall. It counts as a test grade, the colored poster counts as a quiz grade, and the audience participation form counts as a classwork grade.

We will also be learning about the holiday traditions in different hispanic countries, so we will be going to the computer lab to do some quick research. The students will need to come up with five facts about their country and present them to the class in English with a possibility of presenting some facts in Spanish. It should be fun and informative. We will also be making traditional Mexican tin ornaments this week using heavy duty aluminum foil and sharpie markers. The students will look up a typical ornament that they would like to make.

We also have a few holiday vocabulary activities that we can do such as a word search, crossword puzzle, fill in activities, bingo, and a poem that will use the new vocabulary. We will also be playing some typical festive songs.

I will be staying after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week so that the students may finish any work that they owe.

Homework for the week will be lighter than usual.

Monday night: Word search only
Tuesday night: Finish getting information for your country's traditions for  presentations tomorrow.
Wednesday night:  Crossword puzzle only
Thursday night: bingo sheet for use on Friday
Friday night: Have a wonderful vacation!

Work for the week of December 5, 2011

Buenas tardes a todos,

As I mentioned last week in my blog, the estudiantes this week will be creating a drawing of themselves and practicing for their oral presentations in front of the class. Today, I passed out the rubric and the paper on which  I would like them to draw their head. We started the actual drawing in class and those who used their time wisely were able to complete many of the requirements of the rubric. We will presenting 5 to 7 posters every day this week and it will count as a test grade. Please review the rubric with your student if you have any questions. I showed them models of what I wanted in class. The poster needs to be in color. There will also be a quiz on Friday, December 9 on gusta, adjectives, the preposition "de"and its uses, and the pronouns me,te, le, nos, os, les, plus the vocab from pgs 56 and 57.

Homework for the week of 12-5-11:

Monday night: Finish poster of yourself in color. The only words on it should be your first name and the capital and country. Also, December calendar is due with 8 holiday items in color and numbers in Spanish.
Tuesday night: Finish the packet -the only page that should be left is page 24. I will be collecting it soon.
Wednesday night: Finish vocabulary sheet 2A which should be the bottom half. Study for quiz  on 12/9.
Thursday night: In the book page 65 exercise 33, and page 71 exercise 4. Study for quiz tomorrow.

As of right now, the chapter 2 test will still be on Wednesday, December 14. I reserve the right to move it in either direction depending on how we progress with the presentations and other exercises.
We are still working together with partners, groups, individual and whole class activities which the students seem to be enjoying. We have been having a student from Rivier College observing and helping out a bit 3 days per week. She will possibly be here student teaching in the spring semester. We will see.

Upcoming events: Holiday traditions is various hispanic countries, making tin ornaments, and comprehension videos on  chapter 2.
