Buenas tardes a todos, (Good afternoon everyone)
Just a reminder that ordinarily there is homework Monday through Thursday with none during the weekend, unless of course there is a project. Most of the homework is given in packet form with 4 or 5 pages in a packet. I find that this saves time for everyone in class and the students need to become more responsible for holding on to their work. Losing a packet is not in anyone's best interest.
There will be a quiz on Tuesday of next week on our notes in section 2 of the notebook . In our book, we are still in chapter 1 and the quiz will be on the material covered from pages 6 to 17. We practice the expressions almost everyday, so that the students should be very familiar with the material if they pay attention, participate, and do their homework.
I do stay after school 2 or 3 times per week, usually Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays (late bus on Thursday) unless I have other commitments. I announce when I am available for make-ups or extra help at the beginning of the week. If you are having trouble, please stay. People who continually avoid homework will be asked to stay to make it up. I will be calling home if it is a chronic problem. Gracias!

Week of September 26, 2011
Hola estudiantes and padres (students and parents),
I hope you are all off to a good start in school, but especially in Spanish. So far we have been learning about greetings, goodbyes, capitals, countries, weather, numbers, alphabet, customs in Spain, months, days of the week, money, and feelings. The students are doing well and seem to be enjoying the class.
This week we will be learning about subjects and verbs, telephone and internet expressions, and capital and country expressions. We will be working more with partners now that we have established more routines and we will be writing and performing a dialog at the end of the week. We have also started our listening activities on tape where the students hear native speakers and respond to questions that they hear. It is good for the students to hear other voices and various accents from different countries. There are no quizzes this week, but we have had two so far, some graded homework, and some graded classwork.
The homework for tonight Monday 9/26 is all of page 1a and page 3 exercises 8 and 9 in the packet.
Tuesday night homework will be page 4 in the old packet and page 5V in the new packet which the students will receive tomorrow.
There will be no homework Wednesday or Thursday nights due to the Jewish holidays. We will resume our normal schedule next week of homework Monday through Thursday.

Hola Clases,
We have gotten off to a great start learning the alfabeto, numeros, el tiempo (weather) and the fecha(date). we have given everyone a new Spanish name, have had mini conversations, and passed out money envelopes for the euro program. Homework will be given Monday thru Thursday for most weeks. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy Spanish this year, work hard, and learn many new things. Adios!

homework pages 51 exercise 13 10 sentences minimum, page 52 exercises 16, 17, 18
Buenas noches,
We have just finished a unit on the Mexican holiday called the Day of the Dead which is celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd. WE compared the differences between Halloween and the Day of the Dead and looked on line at the ofrendas that the families make to honor their ancestors. We are making our own ofrendas in class by having the students bring in a photograph of a loved one who has passed away and an object that represents them and what they liked to do. The students then present their photo and object and talk a bit about their relative or pet. After their talk, they put their things on the ofrenda. Everyone will get their things back next week. We also played Halloween/Day of Dead bingo and did a word search with the vocabulary. It has been very interesting for everyone!
We are having another quiz tomorrow on the questions words and how to ask about ages, birthdays and other basic questions. We are continuing with chapter 2 and will learn how to use the verb " to like" in a few days. Grades close this Friday, November 5th and retakes and make-ups have been going on for the last two weeks. I usually stay after school on Mondays and Tuesdays and sometimes on Wednesdays. If your child is having trouble, have them see me for extra help. Most students are consistently doing their homework, however there are a few who are not. I will be contacting parents either through e-mail or phone calls if there is a consistent problem of not completing work.
Tomorrow night's homework is a vocabulary list from pages 56 and 57 in the students' fourth section of their notebooks. We will be changing seats, groups and partner buddies next week. Until then, keep studying!

homework pages 44 and 45 in book -new vocabulary
Buenas noches,
Tonight's homework is to find all the new adjectives on pages 44 and 45 and put them in section 4 of your notebook. We will go over them tomorrow so make sure you know what they mean in English. Tuesday night's homework will be pages 11 and 13 in your new packet, Wednesday night will be pages 16 and 17 in the packet which will be due on Friday due to Spirit Day on Thursday.
We had our first major test last Friday on Chapter 1 and it covered everything we have learned so far. We finished it today. Numbers 0 to 30, all greetings, goodbyes, and basic expressions such as my name is, how are you, where are you from, what time is it, days of the week, months of the year, the date, and of course, the alphabet. We hope to watch a video on chapter 1 on Friday in the computer lab and I will be listening to partner dialogs off and on during the next few weeks for a speaking grade before the term ends. We have also had listening activities with native speakers on tapes and have been working in groups and partners many times per week. Occasionally, we talk about current events that have been involved Hispanic people around the world such as the Chilean miners. I hope everyone is enjoying Spanish!

homework -pages 32 and 33 in the book -exercises 1 thru 6, finish time sheet and study for the chapter one test

We are having our first chapter test this Friday, October 15th. It will include a listening section, reading a story for comprehension, multiple choice questions on grammar and culture, and 2 essays. It will cover everything that we have learned so far. We have been practicing everyday with questions and working together in groups and partners to study the material. We had a quiz last Friday which was bit challenging for some students, so I am hoping that this past week has been beneficial for everyone to ask questions and understand the chapter a bit more.
Tonight's homework, as all of our homeworks, is going to reinforce what we have learned and help the students study for the test. Hopefully, it will all go well. Next week, I would like to go to the computer lab to watch the video that goes with the chapter and possibly start an artist project if we have time and the lab is available. More on that next week. In the meantime, study hard and good luck (buena suerte) on the test tomorrow.

Homework for 10-5-10 worksheet pages 6 and 8
Buenas tardes amigos,
This week we are starting a new month with our calendarios de octubre and finding 8 Halloween items to draw and label on our calendarios. This was due today and if it was not passed in I will take it tomorrow with 10 points off for being late. Remember it is worth two homework grades, one for the pictures and labels and one for the Spanish numbers. Tonight's homework is about time and the verb "to be". Use your notes if you have any questions or if you have your book, that's good too. Tomorrow night's homework will be worksheet pages 10 and 11 and Thursday night's home work will be a time worksheet, the verb to be and to study for our Friday quiz.
We have been learning a little bit about Hispanic culture and will be doing more of that this week. We will also be having another quiz on Friday on time, pronouns, and the verb "ser". We will be practicing all this week. We also have been listening to native speakers on our Spanish tapes that go with chapter and still need to practice our countries and capitals. We are still introducing new routines to the class and will be working in groups hopefully by the end of the week. In the meantime, keep practicing your Spanish so that we can do some more dialogs and introduce more items for conversation.
